How to take sharp photos with your phone

Blurry phone photos almost always come down to one of five causes. Here's how to tell which one you're dealing with, and the fix for each.

Why phone photos come out blurry

A soft photo almost always has one of five causes: a smudged lens, the phone moving during the shot, focus on the wrong thing, the subject moving, or a zoomed crop. Each one has a different fix, so it's worth working out which it is. Zoom in on the photo: if everything is equally soft, suspect the lens or shake. If something is sharp but not your subject, it's focus.

Clean the lens

The single most common cause. Phone lenses live in pockets and get fingerprints, which spread light into a hazy glow, especially around bright lights. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth before any shot that matters.

Stop camera shake

Get the focus right

Freeze moving subjects

Stabilisation fixes your movement, not your subject's. For children, pets or sport you need a fast shutter: about 1/250 s for people walking, 1/500 s or faster for running. In low light that means a higher ISO and some noise, which is better than blur. See ISO on a phone camera.

Avoid digital zoom

Zooming past your phone's real lenses just crops and enlarges the image, and the camera sharpens to hide it. Use the lens steps your phone actually has (0.5x, 1x, 3x and so on), and in dim light prefer the main camera, which gathers the most light. Why your 3x isn't always the 3x lens is explained in wide vs ultra-wide vs telephoto.

In One Camera

One Camera has tap-to-focus, AE/AWB lock, a self-timer and a zoom ladder of your phone's real lenses in the free version. One Camera Pro adds manual shutter speed and focus, with focus peaking to show exactly what's sharp. Pro is a one-time purchase, and one short ad unlocks it for 24 hours.

Questions

Why are my phone photos blurry?

Usually a smudged lens, the phone moving during the shot, focus on the wrong spot, a moving subject, or digital zoom. Clean the lens, hold the phone steady, tap to focus on your subject, and use your phone's real lens steps instead of zooming in between.

How do I take sharper photos in low light?

Steady the phone on something solid and use the self-timer, so the camera can use a slower shutter speed without shake. Stay on the main camera, which gathers the most light.

Does digital zoom make photos blurry?

Yes. Digital zoom crops and enlarges the image, so fine detail is lost. Use the zoom steps that match your phone's real lenses.
